Importing Custom Inflatables into Australia: Declaration, GST and ChAFTA
The importer, or a licensed customs broker, lodges the import declaration with the Australian Border Force, and GST is generally 10% of the taxable importation value: customs value plus duty, international freight and insurance. Confirm the general rate and any ChAFTA preference, with valid proof of origin, for the final tariff item. The GST base is the detail buyers miss: it is the customs value plus duty, freight and insurance, not the invoice total on its own. On freight, express or air usually 4–15 working days, and sea, rail or truck usually 20–45 days, after dispatch and subject to route and customs.

Who lodges the declaration
The importer, or a licensed customs broker, lodges the import declaration with the Australian Border Force, and GST is generally 10% of the taxable importation value: customs value plus duty, international freight and insurance. Confirm the general rate and any ChAFTA preference, with valid proof of origin, for the final tariff item.
For a company that already imports the path is short; for an agency producing a campaign, a licensed broker is the usual route. Either way it is agreed before the commercial invoice is issued, because the consignee details are not something to correct while the goods are in transit.
What the 10% is charged on
GST is calculated on the taxable importation value, which adds duty, international freight and insurance to the customs value. On a bulky, light shipment that freight element is a larger share than buyers expect, which is why a goods price is not a landed cost.
Ask for the CIF value and the intended incoterm in writing. DDP is reviewed by quotation rather than offered as standard.
The preference question
A ChAFTA preference is not automatic. It has to be confirmed for the final tariff item, and it depends on valid proof of origin, so it is a conversation with the broker rather than an assumption to build into a budget.
An inflatable is also not one commodity: the fabric body, the blower, any lighting and the accessories can each sit under a different tariff item, and the answer can differ between them.
The seasons are reversed
The seasons are reversed: the outdoor peak is the southern summer from December to February, Australia Day falls on 26 January, and Melbourne Cup Day is the first Tuesday in November and a public holiday across Victoria.
For a northern-hemisphere buyer this is the trap. The Australian outdoor peak sits in the months when European and North American production is winding down for the year-end, so an Australia Day or summer campaign is ordered during someone else's Q4 rush.
Timing it against the calendar
Work back from the installation date. Bulk production typically takes 3–8 days for simple items, 7–15 days for standard custom work and 15–25 days for complex or large pieces, counted from final design approval. Working back from Australia Day on 26 January, that means approving artwork by early November for a complex piece shipped by sea, or by early December for air freight.
That puts approval for a January installation in early November — before the northern year-end peak, not after it.

Lead time
- Typical: Bulk production typically takes 3–8 days for simple items, 7–15 days for standard custom work and 15–25 days for complex or large pieces, counted from final design approval
- Can be shorter: Repeat orders on an approved design can run shorter
- Freight and import time come on top. Lead time is confirmed per project once artwork, size, quantity and destination are fixed; treat any figure quoted before that as indicative.
