The finish arch is the photograph every runner takes home and the fixed point the timing crew, medics and broadcast work around. It goes up on a closed road in the early hours, has to leave room for the timing system and emergency access underneath it, and must come down on schedule once the road reopens.

Finish structures are normally installed during the road closure before the start, often in the dark, by an event crew that is also laying timing mats, barriers and gantries. The arch has to fit that sequence: in position before the timing system is set, fixed before barriers close the area.
Strike is the part organisers underestimate. After the last finisher the road reopens on a permit schedule, and deflating, folding and clearing a large arch has to be on the crew plan with real time allocated.
Fixing and wind
Closed public roads cannot take stakes. Arch legs are ballasted, usually with water or sand weights, and the ballast position has to leave the timing mat and clock placement untouched.
Tying off to crowd barriers is only acceptable if the barrier supplier confirms the barriers are meant to take that load; by default they are not.
The clear height under the arch has to pass the tallest vehicle that will use the route during the race — lead vehicles, motorbikes carrying camera crews, and ambulances.
Blower and cable belong on the side of the route away from the finish chute, so no cable crosses the lane runners and medics use.
Wind and weather: No fixed wind speed is published. Do not operate in strong winds, storms or severe weather; a site-specific anchoring plan and operator supervision are required. Confirm vehicle clearance, runner flow, guy-rope zones and the organiser's site rules.
Common failure points
The clear opening is specified as the arch's overall width. Once the leg diameter is taken off, the lane is too narrow for the timing mats and the medical access lane side by side.
The arch arrives with the blower inlet on the wrong side for this course, so the only route for the cable is across the finish chute.
Sponsor logos sit only at the top centre. Finish photographs are taken from the runner's height looking forward, the top of the arch is out of frame, and the logos the sponsor paid for never appear.
The ballast plan was made at a training day on grass. On race day the arch stands on tarmac with no stake points and nothing on site to weigh it down.
No strike plan. The road is due to reopen, the arch is still inflated, and the crew is also clearing barriers and timing equipment.
